Importance of Storyboarding

As a director in a video production, once you’ve completed a shooting script the best thing to do is sit down with an artist and your leading camera operator (usually a director of photography) and break down the script shot by shot. Have your artist create storyboards of the shots, this way it can later be used as a clear road map for actors, animators, and other storytellers working on the production. A refined storyboard can sometimes almost be as complete as the production itself.

Here is a great example of a refined storyboard from Disney’s “Finding Dory.” The artwork doesn’t need to be amazing, but the framing and edits are there in the final output of the animated film.
