Tutorials: Get to the Point

An amazing part of living in this day in age is if you don’t know how to do something you can most likeley find a tutorial for it online. As a video editor, I have had to utilize YouTube hundreds of times to fix issues with software, learn how to do certain editing transitions clients wanted, and learn new techniques for edits and management.

One problem I have constantly run into is the amount of time content creators take to get to the point. On any given video, we spend approximatley two to three minutes welcoming the viewer to the video and the channel. The next few minutes are genrally spent trying to explain basic things that you should already know before even getting to this point. Then finally the tutorial begins about five minutes in.

Since this is something that happens to me alot I’ve learned how to scrub through to the important parts and get exactly what I need in the matter of a minute. Sometimes the best thing to do is if the video creator is sharing their screen I will mute the video, scrub through the entire lesson, and then immedietley try to execute the lesson.

If I miss a step I simply take a step back and just watch the segment I needed. This has been a crucial time saver in learning tricks and skills in editing seeing as some tutorials are over twelve minutes long, and I spend about five minutes engaging them. Remember, unless you want to hear witty banter about something you are learning, go ahead and just mute and scrub through and watch carefully, save yourself some time.
